Top Tips: How to Get Noticed

We stumbled upon this article in a recent issue of the publication Computer arts and decided we would share parts of it with you. Good advice for anyone promoting a business regardless of the industry. If you'd like to read the entire article, it can be found in the November 2005 issue of Computer Arts. Here are the top tips:

1. Create a strong Identity / Brand: An immediately recognizable and consistent brand can put an otherwise low-profile company on the map. It suggests to potential clients and the public at large that the company is professional and reputable and can help to convey the attitude and values of a company.

2. Start a Blog: Blogging is a powerful way to promote yourself. The trick is to increase your status from a "nobody" to someone who is considered an authority in the industry. Post tips and tricks or helpful tutorials to demonstrate that you really know what you're talking about. Make sure to avoid things that could upset people, such as politics or useless details about your personal life. To get started download a blogging tool such as wordpress or blogger. It'll only take five minutes.

3. Speak at an Event: This is a stellar way to promote yourself as you will instantly be seen as a leader in your industry, presuming, of course, that the event is related to your field. Spend time, "Googling" for events in your specialist area and get in touch with the event organisers. They are always looking for talented fresh blood and they just might take you up on your offer to speak.

4. Attend Events: Attend events and meet as many people as you can. Make sure that you've got a stack of quality business cards, put on a smiling face, and go and shake as many hands as you can. You'll be surprised how many opportunities come out of it.

5. Network: Nothing will get your name out there like some good solid networking. If you're an introvert it's often quite scary meeting new people, but once you get started you'll start to enjoy it and make a lot of friends in the process. Find local events that relate to your field and go there with a goal of meeting as many people as possible.

6. Don't forget your signature: Every email you send out could act as a small advertisement for you and your skills. You'd be surprised at how often people click on links in email signatures. Make sure to put the full URL of your site along with the name of the site. Avoid cryptic messages or strange spelling and you'll be a self-promotion winner.

7. Start a community website: One of the most powerful ways to promote yourself is by launching a website that is centred around your industry. This takes time but the payoff can be amazing. Running a community site will also earn you a huge amount of goodwill with the community which will open doors in the future.

8. Have a memorable business card: When you're networking at events and parties, the first advertisement people will ever see for you is your business card. If it's printed on good quality paper, is well designed and easy to read, people will remember you and what you do. This is a vital step to moving your career on to that next level.

9. Be Nice: You'd be surprised at the effect being kind and thoughtful can have on people. Don't have any secret agendas and hidden motives with people - just be honest and open. This will show people that they can trust you and that it's great to work with you. In a world of selfishness, a smile and a kind word can go a long way.
  1. Yes - true, but is being noticed is just the first step;)

  2. Start a design 'guild'. Gain the respect of industry peers. Learn to win friends and influence people. Of course pretend this isn't your agenda.

  4. There definitely are plenty of ways to get noticed. However, the examples/ideas above do seem pretty good. I'll need to get started on this. If only I could be nice to people and speak in public! ;o)

Another way to get noticed is to stick to something no matter what it is. The stupider it is, the better it is. Soon enough lots of people will talk about you. Most people will make fun of you, but in the eyes of many you'll end up looking like an expert! Look around, many get noticed this way. The good thing about it certainly is the fact that it does not take much to get noticed this way! You guy's can say whatever you want, I'll stick to what I'm saying... and YOU are going to make me look like an expert on "how to get noticed"! ;o)
